The Prestige, 2006 (dir. Christopher Nolan)

“Now you’re looking for the secret… but you won’t find it, because of course you’re not really looking. You don’t really want to know. You want to be fooled.”
I love everything about this movie.  From the way the story paces itself, starting off with a tale of dueling magicians trying to out do each other.  Then slowly escalating  into something much, much darker.  The contrast of the two main characters, and ultimately the duality of each.  How the film systematically breaks down each and every one of the tricks shown on screen, sometimes right there for every person to see, sometimes it’s much more subtle.  It’s organic in a way that it knows how you feel and what you’re thinking even before you realize it yourself, of which is captured and revealed in the very first moments and lines in the film… and then again to remind us at the very end.  But most of all, I love how it’s able to achieve the seemingly impossible: Long after you find out the secret… you still want more.
I’ve seen this movie 20 times, I implore that you watch it at least once.
“You never understood, why we did this. The audience knows the truth: the world is simple. It’s miserable, solid all the way through. But if you could fool them, even for a second, then you can make them wonder, and then you… then you got to see something really special… you really don’t know?… it was… it was the look on their faces…”
